In its continuing series of presenting outstanding live musical performances to the Island of Bali the
Padma Resort Legian presents a night of uniquely exotic international musical collaboration on Sunday, March 11, 2018.
Part of their current international tour, Bruce Huebner playing a Japanese ancient
Shakuhachi bamboo flute combines talents with George Quirin a maestro of the classical Spanish guitar promise to mesmerise their Bali audience as they jointly and severally perform music encompassing the works of
J.S. Bach, Antonio Carlos Jobin, Thelonious Sphere Monk, and
Agustín Barrios - plus the performance of a number or original compositions.
Both iconoclastic in its unique musical approach and fantastic in the resulting amalgamation – this is a concert not to be missed!
Bruce Huebner has embraced Japan and its ancient musical forms with a enthusiasm that astounds even the native Japanese. He has taken the deceptively simple Japanese bamboo flute –
Shakuhachi, and managed to master both its traditional repertoire while at the same time exploring the diverse world of classical and modern music. Hueber’s greatest pride is when visibly moved Japanese tell him they have discovered the great value and mystery of
Shakuhachithrough its unrivaled mastery by a non-Japanese.
George Quirin is first and foremost a guitarist, but is also a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, collaborator, performer and teacher who works from a base in Santa Barbara, California. An acknowledged musical performer, Quirin has performed at music festivals across the USA and opened shows forte like of
Ray Charles, Jackson Browne, and
the Chick Corea Electric Band.
A typical performance opens with two solo pieces as George performs a flamenco composition on the Spanish guitar followed by Bruce making a bold and dramatic entrance via the audience performing a centuries-old Buddhist meditative composition on his
Shakuhachi flute.
The audience now comfortably settled in and convinced that they are in the presence of musical genius, Bruce and George take the evening up a notch performing a series of duets on two instruments heretofore alien to each other.
Informal and educational, Bruce and George will punctuate the evening with anecdotes and memorable pieces of musical history – revealing along the way that the Japanese flute and Spanish guitar trace their roots to the same cradle of civilization. Musicologists now know that the
shakahuchi came to Japan via the ancient
Silk Road, while the Guitar is linked to flamenco and Renaissance traditions tracing their antecedents to the Middle Easter
Oud.
The
Shakuhachi flute and Spanish guitar are two old friends sharing familial links that are now brought to the performance stage in Bali by two old friends who have recorded original compositions and performed to great acclaim on their past and current musical tour.
