Bali is known by the nickname Island of Thousand Temples.How many the actual number of temple in Bali?
Based on the records of the Religion Department of Bali (until 2011),there are 4,356 pieces Three heaven temple in every region of the island of Bali,723 Jagat heaven temple and 923 Swagina temple or Kawitan temple.So the total numberare 6,002 Balinese temples.
Thousands Temples in the Bali categorized into several groups,because in reality not all temples are places of worship for the majority or the general public.
Based on public owner (who care and pray to the temple),The Temples of Bali devided in grouped into four sections namely:
1. Kawitan Temple is heaven or the temple where ancestral spirits are worshiped by the origin or wit in the genetic lineage,for example Pura Panti,Dadya,Paibon.
2.Swagina Temple is a temple worshiped by a group that is bound by the same profession in the future livelihoods such as Pura Subak (farmers),Pura Melanting (traders).
3.Three Heaven Temple is present in every village in Bali to worship the traditional prabhawa Widhi Ida Hyang Wasa,such as Pura Desa,Pura Puseh,Pura Dalem.
4.Goda Jagat Temple/common is the general status of the temple devotees are from various groups such as Purusada Temple,Pura Dhalem Build Sakti,Pura Besakih,Pura Goa Lawah,Pura Uluwatu,Pura Pucak Mangu,Pura Bolo/Bahula,Wayah Pura Dalem Majapahit,and others.
